2006 : Jan entered the world in the middle of the Roaring 20s, a time of great excitement and energy. He was born on July 6, 1925, in Heerenveen, Netherlands, to proud parents, Age and Ymkje (Esther) Haringsma. Jan grew up in a fairly large family - he was the fourth of five children. The economics of the day were tough, and that meant hand-me-down clothes for the children and few material things, but the Haringsmas were a close-knit family held fast with the things that money couldn’t buy. Already at the age of six, Jan knew what he wanted to be in life - a seaman. School was never really his favorite place to be, so when he turned 19, he made a pact with his mother that he would make good grades at Nautical School, or else quit. His dream of being a seaman was all he needed to excel in his studies and upon graduating Jan was made a ship’s Captain. This was quite an honor and rare because Jan was pretty young, he was only in his 20s. By the time he retired in 1983, Jan had sailed around the globe many times over and commanded several different ships. Jan loved to share his passion of sailing with his beloved wife, Merikay, who he married on December 3, 1980, in Holland, Michigan. Merikay accompanied Jan on many of his sailing expeditions, some times remaining at sea for 6 months at a time. As all experienced Captain’s would, Jan did all he could to avoid rough weather, especially when Merikay was onboard, as she often was. But like life, there were still a few rough patches along the way. When they weren’t at sea, Jan and Merikay had a home in Noordwyk, Netherlands, though they weren’t there much either because they loved to travel throughout Europe as often as possible. With a heart devoted to sailing, it was very hard for Jan to stay away from the sea after retiring. In fact, he almost risked his pension because he wanted to sail again (thankfully, Merikay brought him to his senses). A year later, in 1984, the couple moved to Merikay’s hometown of Holland, Michigan. Here, Jan enjoyed finding antique Ivory and clocks to add to his prized collection. After a while, Jan decided he and Merikay needed some "business experience" so they attended business classes at Davenport College. Then, in 1990, they put this education to good use operating their own business called Lukadia Chocolatier, at the Dutch Village, which imported Belgian Chocolate. Sadly, during this time, Jan suffered a devastating stroke in 1995, which left him unable to speak. Despite his limitations, Jan continued to find ways to share his love and kindness with everyone around him. It was only natural for a man who was completely at home at sea to be awestruck by the vastness and beauty of God’s creation. Jan loved to be out under the stars, gazing up into the heavens. He was a very spiritual, intelligent and humble man, who loved his wife, children and grandchildren, unendingly. His Bouvier De Flanders dog, Ghina, was also a much-loved companion, as where the many other dogs that preceded her. Jan was a true gift to everyone that knew and loved him. Jan A. Haringsma, age 80, of Holland, MI, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at the Hospice House of Holland. Jan is survived by his wife, Merikay; daughters: Ymkje Haringsma of Paris, France, and Rimke and Tree Haringsma, both of the Hague; sons: Pieter Haringsma of Amsterdam and Jelle Haringsma of Stolpwilk, Netherlands; 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; sister, Joanna Haringsma of Leidschendam, Netherlands; sister-in-law, Sheri (Leonard) Conley of Allendale, Michigan. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bart Haringsma, sisters Emmy Haringsma vd Brink, and Rimke Haringsma Ratsma. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 22, at 12 noon at the Northwood Chapel of Dykstra Life Story Funeral Homes. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at that same location. Volgens het ministerie van buitenlandse zaken is het niet uitgesloten dat de Vietnamezen binnenkort naar Nederland komen. Vandaag wordt de Agulhas in Singapore verwacht. Daar zal kapitein J. A.
