2010 : KENOSHA - Alvin John Hoekstra, 73, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Wynwood of Kenosha. He was born on May 30, 1937, to the late Cornelius and Henrietta G. (nee: Elenbaas) Hoekstra in Orange City, Iowa. He attended Christian Schools of Orange City, Iowa and graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa. He attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa and Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a MA Degree. On August 15, 1961, he married Virginia R. Engbers at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa. Alvin taught at Ripon Christian High School in Ripon, Calif., Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa, and Zion Benton Township High School in Zion, Ill. for many years. Alvin then worked for CRST Trucking in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for 10 years and for Kix-Kutzler in Kenosha for five years. Alvin was a member of the Racine Christian Reformed Church and taught Sunday School. He was also a Deacon for the church and was active in the Men’s Bible Study. He was a member of the Painters Union and the Teachers Union. Alvin is survived by his loving wife, Virginia of Kenosha; his loving children, Ryan James (Kim Veenstra) Hoekstra of Pella, Iowa, Rachelle Joy (Michael) Apol of Dayton, Ohio, Roderick J, Hoekstra of Seattle, Wash., and Renee JoLynn Hoekstra of Boston, Mass.; his siblings, Joan (James) Horstman of Sioux Center, Iowa, Marge (Arnold) Van Gelder of Orange City, Iowa, Gladys (Harold) Hoekstra of Orange City, Iowa, and Karen (Dennis) Vis of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his grandchildren, Brandon Apol, Elayne Apol, Nia Hoekstra, and Ryley Hoekstra. He was preceded in death by his brother, Corwin; and his granddaughter, Ravyn. Funeral services for Alvin will be held on Monday, June 21, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the Racine Christian Reformed Church, 900 Illinois Street, Racine. Interment will follow at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Bruch Funeral Home. Memorials would be appreciated to the Racine Christian School, 912 Virginia Street, Racine, Wis. 53405; or to the Care Net Pregnancy Center, 2222 Roosevelt Road, Kenosha, Wis. 53143. Alvin professed Question and Answer 1 of the Heidelberg Catechism: "What is your only comfort in life and in death? That I am not my own, but belong--body and soul, in life and in death-to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ."
