In 1925 the family came to Canada to start a new life. They lived and worked for various farmers in Prince Edward County and later near Georgetown, Ont.To fulfil their dream of owning land of their own the family moved to the Lakehead in 1928. A farm was purchased near South Gillies and the family set about together to build it up.He got involved in 4-H and through showing livestock and crops earned tripsto the Royal Winter Fair and Minnesota State fair where he learned a great many things that would help him later in life.During the 30’s the boys often worked off the farm to supplementthe farm income and Dad spent a couple ofmemorable winters working with a team of horses building the Trans-Canada highway in the area between Shabaqua and Raith.During the 40’s Dad farmed in partner ship with his brother Cecil, continuing to develop a herd of purebred Holstein cattle and operating an egg hatchery. In 1952, he met Gaye Dekker and after a courtship of a few short months they were married on July 31.He sold his interest in the South Gillies farm and moved his new family to a farm purchased on Highway 61 in the Slate River valley.Together they raised a family of 8 children and developed a fine herd of Holstein cows. From the late 40’s to the early 60’s he also operated a small AI business.Son Bill joined the farm business from the early 70’s until the farm was sold in 1993. He had retired to the city, first to Marks St. and later to the present home on Ernestine Ave.In August 1998 he was greatly saddened by the death of his beloved wife Gaye after 46 years of marriage.Over the years, he was active in a variety of farm and community organizations.
