2012 : Berdella De Boer, 95, Hills, died Sunday, July 22, 2012, at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, at the United Reformed Church in Hills. Burial will follow at United Reformed Church Cemetery in Hills.
Berdella Vander Meulen was born Oct. 31, 1916, to Edward and Alice Vander Meulen in Orange City, Iowa. She grew up in the Sioux Center, Iowa, Orange City, Alton, Iowa, and Ocheyedan, Iowa, areas. She worked at home and helped pick corn, milking and doing housework.
On Feb. 20, 1940, she married Frank De Boer at her parents’ home. They began their married life in Rock Rapids, Iowa. They lived in Sanborn, Iowa, and Ocheyedan before moving back to Sanborn. In 1944 the couple began farming near Harris, Round Lake and Lake Park before moving to Hills. She worked at the Tuff Memorial Home. She moved to the Tuff Village in April 2002 and became a resident at the Tuff Memorial Home in March 2006.
While at the nursing home Berdella made many friends, welcomed new residents, read the Bible and prayed with residents.
Mrs. De Boer is survived by seven children, Charles (Rheta) De Boer, and Erwin (Faith) De Boer, all of Hills, Mary (Allen) Van Raalte, Sioux Falls, S.D., Alma (Erwin) Kooistra, Rock Valley, Iowa, Burdett (Butch) De Boer, Alvord, Iowa, Mina Brandt, Remsen, Iowa, and Carmen (Greg) Dougherty, Valley Springs, S.D.; 24 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; a brother, Alan (Norma) Vander Meulen, Ocheyedan; a sister, Louise (Ervin) Smidt, Artesia, Calif.; several foster children including, April Anderson, Worthington, and Joel McKnelly, Sioux Falls; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank De Boer; two brothers, Roy and Edward Vander Meulen; and two sisters, Nelvina Bergsma and Mildred Eversdyke.
