artikel in memoriam:
2013 : Jean Elizabeth (Zorn) Strand, 88, passed away Thursday December 12, 2013 at Foss Home and Village in Seattle, WA. She was born on December 9, 1925 to Horace and Jean Zorn in Seattle, and was proud to have lived her entire life in the Greenlake and Maple Leaf neighborhoods of Seattle.
An avid musician and life-long patron of the musical arts, she was an incredibly accomplished classical pianist and accompanist. She worked countless professional Musicians’ Union jobs from World War II through the 1950’s, including live radio performances. She embraced many musical forms throughout her life, including jazz, Brazilian, Hawaiian and popular standards (unusual for a classical musician of her time). She was also a patron of fine art. She had a private art collection of Pacific Northwest Artists, many of whom she maintained friendships with throughout her life.
Education was very important to her. She received both a B.A. and Masters of Fine Arts at the University of Washington. She taught Music, English, History and Social Studies for 30 years at Seattle Public Schools and inspired her students to maintain high standards and to achieve their goals. Her love of learning was important throughout her life. She collected and read literally thousands of books, never tiring of learning something new on a wide variety of subjects.
In her private life, Jean loved to travel throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. She had a special fondness for Hawaii, where she traveled every spring for over 20 years. She loved to learn about the history and culture of each area, and each trip revitalized her. After retiring from teaching, she immersed herself in family history and genealogy. She was always willing to help others with their genealogical research and helped countless folks get started with their family genealogy.
She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Glenn T. Strand. She is survived by her daughter Jan G. Strand and son-in-law Peter J. Hemmen.
Services were held Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Epiphany Parish of Seattle, 1805 38th Ave, Seattle, W
