Jan Bos is born in the small country village ’t Zandt in the northern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen.
His parents are Hindrik Jakobs Bos and Aaltje Jans Pelmulder.

The iron smith Jan Bos married at the age of 27 years on 29 March 1873 at his bride’s birthplace Uithuizen to the two years younger Grietje Siekman. His father is then a shop keeper.

On 19 April 1893 laborer Jan Bos, his wife Grietje and their children Jan (17 y), Aaltje (16), Klaas (13), Anna (9), Adolf (7) and Martje (4) arrived on the SS Maasdam at New York, Ellis Island.
Their last residence place in the Netherlands was Spijk, a country village in the former municipality Bierum, since 1990 part of mun. Delfzijl, in the northeast of the province Groningen, and their destination is Bozeman, seat of Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana.

In 1900 farmer John (57 y) and his wife Gertie (53 y) Bos resided with their children Henry (23 y, [Spijk] NL, black smith), John (26 y NL [Spijk], black smith), Alice (23 y NL), Anna (21 y NL), Clauzon (18 y NL [Spijk], farm laborer), Adolph (16 y, New York, Irish) and Martha (13 y Iowa) at Manhattan, Gallatin County, Montana.

Adolph looks to have been adopted because both his parents are Irish. Martha has a father of Ohio and an English/ Canadian mother, so looks also to have been adopted. bron: findagrave.com
