1991 : Orville Kooiman, age 46, of Orange City, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 31, 1991 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital after a long illness.
Orville was born Sept 24, 1944 at Tyler, Minn., the son of Herman and Lena (De Kam) Kooiman. His parents died when he was a child, so at the age of 10, he made his home with his brother, Marvin and his wife Gladys at Waupun, Wis.
On Dec. 22, 1965, he married Florence Davelaar at Sioux Center. In 1967, he graduated from Dordt College in Sioux Center. He then became principal of the Christian School at New Holland, S.D. From 1970-1978 he taught at the Sanborn Christian School, and from 1978-1987 he served as custodian of the Sioux Center Christian School. In 1987, he became librarian at Mid America Reformed Seminary near Orange City. He and his family moved to Orange City in October of 1990. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Orange City and had served on the board of directors of Western Christian High School in Hull. He had also been involved in Cadets.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tim and his wife Lauri of Lansing, 111.; Scott of Crestwood, 111., and his fiancée Bonnie Laninga of Holland, Mich.; daughter, Nicole at home; and a sister, Mrs. Adrian (Caroline) Kuipers of Edgerton, Minn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers and sister, Marvin, Nellie, Clair, Gerald, Wilbert and Lester.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, Sept. 3 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Ralph A. Pontier officiating. Interment was prior to the service at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. A family service was also held on Tuesday at the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City with Dr. Nelson Kloosterman officiating.
